There is a small yet enthusiastic faction of the Twin City Sauna Club that gathered this past week by the shores of a crystal clear lake outside Spooner, WI.
While experiencing an extra biting cold Northwest wind, the sauna flow evolved into microbursts:
- go in hot room.
- toss a generous shot of water on the sauna rocks.
- heat quick.
- go outside.
- cool down.
- do it again.
After 8 vigorous sauna rounds, one feels relaxed, liberated and free.

2. Outdoor Chill Out. Fresh air is part of being healthy. What a crime that all health club saunas don’t allow for an outdoor chill out area.
Guest post from Andrew who has installed a conventional wood stove for his sauna, and has found a simple solution to the loyly (steam from water being tossed on sauna rocks) quest. So far he has not had any problems with his common steam pot that sits atop the wood stove. He filled it with rocks from his nearby stream to make sure the loyoly is true (and from his land).
We are a big fan of granite rocks. Specifically, rounded aged granite rocks from the icy shores of Lake Superior. Rocks without cracks or crevices. There is a stigma and fear that sauna rocks can explode. Sure, if you’re using rocks that allow for water to get in cracks, they will surely explode!
