Let’s welcome back Ethan, founder of Sauna for Seniors where he presents his paper on the cost benefits of sauna, with a focus on 65+ populations.
A few summary thoughts :
- Strong potential ROI: Expanding sauna access for adults 65+ could yield a benefit–cost ratio of ~15:1 to 50:1, outperforming many public health interventions, including daytime reruns of The Price is Right.
- Meaningful disease reduction signal: The seminal Finnish study reported that regular sauna use is associated with ~65% lower risk of neurodegenerative diseases. That’s not snake oil. It’s peer reviewed and a foundation for more research and more activiation.
- Low implementation cost: Providing sauna access across 39 senior-focused locations was estimated at ~$378,750 total, including installation and outreach. Conservative savings still significant: Even with just 2.5% participation, projected savings reach $5.6M–$18.8M over five years for the target population. And with this, the journey can begin with the first one.
- Broader upside likely understated: Perhaps neurodegenerative disease is the tip of the iceberg. Additional benefits (cardiovascular, mental health, etc.) could increase returns further, strengthening the case for public investment.
