Sauna health studies: would you like to participate?

light steam graphic

Someday soon, you may be called upon to participate in a study on how exposure to temperature extremes through sauna may affect our physiology.

Someday soon, you may be called upon to participate in a study on how exposure to temperature extremes through sauna may affect our mood and well being.

Someday soon, you may be called upon to participate in a study on how exposure to temperature extremes may affect your appreciation of your favorite beverage in a glass made entirely out of ice.  No, just kidding about that one, but,

Until that time, I ask you to start keeping score of how good we feel the morning after a sauna in temperature extremes.

Until that time, I ask you to listen to Wim Hof here, and here, as his work is much in step, and in parallel to where we are headed as a tribe of authentic sauna enthusiasts who are not regressing to the mean.

It has been said that the worse the weather, the better the sauna.  We know this to be true.  But soon we will be engaging folks in white lab coats with such possible tools as negative ion detectors, blood pressure monitors, and devices not known to the average bear, to validate our credence:

  • Sauna is good for us.
  • Sauna in nature, in temperature extremes, is even better for us.

Right now, we are putting together a platform which will mean engaging a volunteer army of enlisted service men and women, willing to stand up to those giving us funny looks as we step out of our holes in the ice, as steam billows off our bodies between sauna rounds, those willing to participate and contribute to what may end up to be a platform to help others enjoy what we know to be true.

  • Sauna is good for us.
  • Sauna in nature, in temperature extremes, is even better for us.

This study may end up leading to sauna/cold plunge protocols that may, in turn, help folks with PTSD, opioid addiction, eczema, and maybe those simply suffering from a bad case of the Mondays.

The authentic sauna cat is out of the bag.  Isn’t now the time for authentic sauna clinical studies?

the sauna study health professional triangle

We are going to going to mobilize an authentic wood burning sauna, to recreate the vibe that we all know and enjoy so well.  We are going to bring this sauna to a series of health care professionals to follow their protocols, with their patients.  We are not going to leave the sauna in the hospital parking lot, like some fish bowl carnival side show.  We are going to deploy the authentic sauna in a saunatimes approved space in nature, amongst trees, with access to a lake or fresh stream.  We are going to work with the professionals in white lab coats.  We will not be out numbered or marginalized. Our smiling team of saunameisters, who understand the process of a good sauna session, will guide the participants through AUTHENTIC sauna therapy.

The complete heat up, the clean rinse/cold plunge, and the complete cool down.  3 sauna rounds.  “Nice job.  See you again Tuesday.  Please remember to fill out your survey form on your way out.”

Under the guidance of the health care professionals, we will sauna with those with PTSD, opioid addiction, eczema, and simply those suffering from bad cases of the Mondays.  By the time we are well into the study, the person in the white lab coat will be begging for their own authentic sauna in their own backyard.  At that time, we will provide them with their own sauna, give it the sign of the authentic sauna cross, bless it, and they will have a kick ass sauna party and they will continue their sauna studies with a smile.  They will bring in the control group and say “sorry you couldn’t sauna before but now you can.”

And like a candle that lights another candle, we will pack up the mobile sauna, and bring it to the next person in the white lab coat on our calendar, as their study will be all lined up and ready for implementation.

We can bring this sauna to the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Department.  We can bring this sauna, as JP suggests, to the University of Minnesota to study Seasonal Affect Disorder.  We can bring this sauna to the person in the white lab coat’s cabin on the shores of Lake Superior.

I am fired up for this mission.  I have helped hundreds of people build their own sauna.  I have built 10 saunas on my own.  This sauna is going to be the most meaningful sauna for me.  Thanks to JP, 612 Sauna Society, we have built a tribe of amazing authentic sauna enthusiasts, some of which have unique skills, contacts, and professions aligned with this mission.  Within a short radius of where I sit, we have sauna stove makers, and The Tylo/Helo/Finleo/Saunatec North American sauna headquarters, and a guy who has built hundreds of saunas.  We have two crazy wonderful Finns who dedicated thousands of miles to bring a mobile sauna around North America to celebrate Finland’s 100 year Independence.  We have Dan and other holistic health professionals.  We have saunatonttu.

Sauna in Nature is bigger than all of us.  The rising sauna tide lifts all boats.

  1. I love your site. I have had an outdoor wood fired sauna built by someone in MN and I’ve had it for over 1 year. I LOVE it, and I’ve stayed cold/sick free.

  2. How could you say “NO”! 🙂 Great idea!!!!

Glenn, Thanks for your dedication and EBook on building saunas. I purchased your EBook back in May and have to be the worlds slowest sauna builder but I just finished it (In the cold mind you) and had my first Traditional Sauna experience on New Year’s Eve.
It has been well over 20 years since I have been in a sauna and has always been a dream of mine to build one. It was a perfect night in south-central WI to enjoy the experience. Cold clear night with a full moon and temps at -11. What an experience to step out of the sauna only to be enveloped by a huge vapor mist rising off your body!
