Sauna Talk: Ashley Mason and Earric Lee

In this live panel from Sauna Days, I welcome two leading voices in sauna research: Dr. Ashley Mason of UCSF and Earric Lee of the Montreal Heart Institute for a candid conversation about where sauna science stands today. Both Ashley and Eric have also joined me individually on past Sauna Talk episodes, and I have links to these episodes within the show notes on saunatimes.com.

This discussion goes well beyond typical wellness headlines. Ashley and Earric emphasize the responsibility of making scientific claims in a growing sauna industry, bringing nuance and humility rather than oversimplification.

Earric shares insights from cardiac rehab research and a broad review of decades of heat therapy studies, noting that despite growing enthusiasm, long-term data remains limited. Ashley adds a mental health perspective, explaining how heat may influence thermoregulation, serotonin, and mood—and raising compelling questions about body temperature and depression.

The conversation explores the gap between clinical protocols and real-world sauna use, including dosage, duration, and frequency—areas still not well defined. They also unpack the differences between traditional and infrared sauna, and why researchers often use controlled environments to isolate heat effects.

Throughout, the panel stays honest about what’s unknown: optimal protocols, the role of cold exposure, and how sauna applies across different populations. Practical takeaways include tracking your own sauna use and recognizing that individual response varies with health, age, and lifestyle.

Audience questions expand the discussion into wearables, temperature measurement, and the role of ritual, rest, and social connection.

After the panel, I had the chance to sit with Ashley and Earric on the sauna bench, where the conversation carried on, happily “nerdy,” for at least two more rounds on the bench, into Lake Superior, and back again. Researchers who sauna, now how great is that?

What emerges is a grounded, thoughtful conversation. Sauna science without over claiming, offering clarity on what heat can do, and what still needs to be understood.
