Infrared light bulb closets peddled at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas.

light steam graphic

A saunatimes enthusiast shared this photo from the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.  What do the following have in common:

  • Infrared light bulb closet.
  • Sunny Delight.
  • Imitation crab meat.
  • Artificial Christmas trees.

Thankfully, people are becoming much more intelligent.  Just because sugar water is colored orange, supplemented with vitamin C, and sold in the dairy section we understand that this is not Orange Juice.  Just because an extruded fish and fish by product compote substrate is painted with a red line and sold in the deli case, we know this is not real crab meat.  And most realize that the Christmas tradition of presents under the tree can indeed be kept intact using a wire framed green plastic synthetic tree, especially with a couple squirts of pine spray.

We know what real orange juice and crab meat tastes like.  We know what a real Christmas tree smells like.  Because of cost or convenience or a combination of both, folks compromise the authentic and often choose the imitation.

Sauna is no different.

Seeing prepackaged kits and slick billboards with bullet pointed health claims, we authentic sauna enthusiasts can shake our heads or smile or a little of both.

“The rising tide lifts all boats.”  100 infrared light bulb closets may turn over one new authentic Finnish sauna enthusiast.

Welcome.

  1. All too true! When people pipe up think this is a harsh assessment they don’t understand that the infrared dealers have brought this on themselves! If they didn’t try to sell their lightbulb boxes by talking down real saunas we’d have no problem. But they do!

They do not cure cancer and you do not sweat out 20% toxins in these things. What you DO get is a half assed feeling of relaxation afterwards. They are a far cry from a real sauna where you alternate between a real hot room and ice cold water or snow. They always will be. Unfortunately they’re here to stay because they’re cheap and cheaply made. If people knew the real difference they’d never buy one.

  2. Cheap, badly made plug-in saunas made for the mass consumer as a weight loss or health gimmick – No thank you! I think I’ll take my chances and pay extra for lava rocks, a real burning fire and plenty of loyly!

Infrared sauna? Don’t make me laugh!
